What is the best outdoor fabric for UAE sun: acrylic, textilene or PVC?

13 October 2026

Rolls of outdoor shade fabric in different colours

"We want an umbrella and an awning for our villa. Which fabric lasts longest in the UAE sun, and what is the difference between acrylic, textilene and PVC?"

Villa owner, The Springs, Dubai

For umbrellas and awnings we recommend solution-dyed acrylic from Sauleda, Recasens or Sunbrella. The colour goes right through the fibre, so it resists fading, rot and UV in the UAE sun, and it comes with a 10 to 12 year fabric warranty. Textilene (a PVC-coated polyester mesh) suits outdoor blinds, where you want airflow and some view through. PVC is used where full rain protection matters.

The three fabrics compared

Solution-dyed acrylic Textilene PVC
What it is Woven acrylic, dyed before spinning Mesh of PVC-coated polyester Solid PVC-coated fabric
Best for Umbrellas, awnings, canopies Outdoor and Zip Screen blinds Covers and full rain protection
Sun and UV Excellent, colour-fast for years Blocks 80% or 90% of the sun's rays Excellent
Airflow Breathable Very breathable, see-through from inside None
Rain Water-resistant, handles a light shower Lets rain through Waterproof
Feel and look Soft, textile look, many colours Technical, fine mesh Smooth, plastic finish

Solution-dyed acrylic: umbrellas and awnings

Most fabrics are woven first and dyed afterwards, so the colour sits on the surface and fades in strong sun. Solution-dyed acrylic is dyed while the fibre is still liquid, so the colour runs right through it. That is why it keeps its colour in the UAE, resists rot and mould, and stays soft.

The manufacturers stand behind it: Sauleda fabric carries a 10-year warranty and Recasens a 12-year warranty against specified defects. Glatz umbrella fabrics are rated UPF 50+, the highest UV rating. See the full range of colours on our outdoor fabrics page.

Textilene: outdoor blinds

Textilene is a strong mesh made of PVC-coated polyester. Textilene 80 blocks up to 80% of the sun's rays and Textilene 90 up to 90%. Because it is a mesh, air moves through it and you can still see out, while heat, glare and dust are cut down. That makes it the usual choice for outdoor blinds such as the Zip Screen 500 on a terrace or pergola.

PVC: when it has to keep rain out

Solid PVC fabric is fully waterproof, so it is used for covers and for shades that must stay dry underneath. It does not breathe, so it can feel warmer underneath than acrylic in the summer.

What about shade sails?

Our standard shade sails use Commercial 95 HDPE, a knitted fabric made for sails. It is strong, protects against UV and lets hot air escape, but it does not stop rain. Waterproof sail fabrics are available on request.

Our advice

  • Umbrella or awning: solution-dyed acrylic, in the colour you like.
  • Blinds on a terrace or pergola: textilene, 80 or 90 depending on how much shade you want.
  • Must stay dry: PVC, or ask us about waterproof options.
