Keeping Your Home Cool This Summer with the Right Shading

Summer in the UAE is no joke. Temperatures regularly push past 45 degrees and the sun beats down on windows and glass doors from early morning until late evening. Most people’s instinct is to turn the AC up higher. But before the electricity bill goes through the roof, it’s worth thinking about what is actually causing the heat in the first place.

A large part of the heat that builds up inside a home comes in through the glass. Glass offers very little resistance to solar heat gain. The sun’s energy passes straight through it, heating the room directly. The hotter the room gets, the harder the AC has to work to bring the temperature down, and the more it costs to run. Block the sun before it hits the glass and you have a much more efficient home.

This is where shading makes a real difference.

How much heat does shading actually block?

Glass on its own in direct sun can reach surface temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees. A quality shading fabric placed in front of the window can reduce solar heat gain by anywhere between 50% and 80%, depending on the fabric openness factor and the angle of the sun. To put that in real terms, a window that is contributing significantly to heating a room can be reduced to something close to neutral. Your AC is no longer fighting a losing battle.

Awnings

An awning installed above a window or glass door is one of the most effective ways to reduce heat coming into the home. The awning extends out and creates a shadow over the glass before the sun even reaches it. With a motorised awning linked to a timer or sun sensor, the awning can open in the morning as the sun rises and retract automatically in the evening when the sun moves away. The projection angle can also be adjusted so you get maximum coverage at the hottest part of the day.

This is a smart and practical solution. You are not relying on anyone to remember to open or close it, and it can be linked to home automation systems to work alongside your AC and lighting schedule.

Shade Sails

Shade sails are a fixed shading option that work well over windows and outdoor spaces adjacent to the home. While they do not retract, they provide consistent shade across the hottest hours and are particularly effective on west and south-facing elevations where the afternoon sun is strongest.

The fabric used in shade sails blocks a high percentage of UV and solar radiation, meaning the glass underneath stays significantly cooler than it would in direct sun. For homeowners who want a low-maintenance option that does not require any motorisation or controls, shade sails are a practical and cost-effective choice.

Outdoor Blinds

Outdoor blinds sit right in front of the glass and are arguably the most direct solution for reducing heat into the home. When lowered, they stop the sun from hitting the glass at all. The glass stays cool, the room stays cooler, and the AC has far less to do.

Unlike indoor blinds, which let the sun hit the glass first and only then try to stop the heat spreading further into the room, outdoor blinds intercept the heat before it ever reaches the glass. It is a meaningful difference. An indoor blind on a hot window is still sitting in a pocket of hot air trapped between the blind and the glass. An outdoor blind means the glass never heats up in the first place.

Outdoor blinds can be motorised and connected to timers or smart home systems, meaning they can be programmed to come down automatically at peak sun hours and raise again in the evening.

The AC Cost Angle

It is worth spelling this out clearly. Every degree of heat that enters through unshaded glass is heat that your AC system has to remove. AC units are rated by their capacity to cool, and when they are constantly fighting solar heat gain through glass, they run for longer cycles, consume more electricity, and wear out faster.

Reducing the heat coming in through the glass is not just about comfort. It directly reduces running costs and extends the life of your AC unit. For a home with several large windows or glass sliding doors on a sun-facing elevation, the difference in electricity consumption can be significant over the course of a UAE summer.
